Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed but cold)

Fruit Filling

  • 2 apples, cored and thinly sliced (about 3 cups)
  • ⅓ cup cranberries (fresh or frozen, optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (fresh preferred)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon

Finishing

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lay out the parchment paper included with the puff pastry on your baking tray and place the pastry sheet on top, ready for filling.
  2. Prepare Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the thinly sliced apples, optional cranberries, melted butter, fresh lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and cinnamon. Mix gently to coat the fruit evenly with the butter and spices.
  3. Assemble Galette: Position the apple mixture in the center of the puff pastry, ensuring to leave a 2-inch border all around. Carefully fold the pastry edges over the apples, overlapping as you go to create a rustic crust.
  4. Apply Egg Wash and Sugar: Brush the folded pastry edges with the lightly beaten egg to give a golden shine. If desired, sprinkle 1 teaspoon of sugar over the egg-washed pastry for extra sweetness and crunch.
  5. Bake: Place the galette in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are soft and cooked through.
  6. Cool and Serve: Allow the galette to cool for about 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, optionally with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for a delightful finish.

Notes

  • You can use any variety of apples you prefer; tart apples like Granny Smith provide a nice balance to the sweetness.
  • Fresh or frozen cranberries add a lovely tart contrast but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • Ensure the puff pastry is cold but thawed to achieve the best flaky texture.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle some nutmeg or ginger into the filling mixture.
  • Serve slightly warm to maximize the flavor and texture of the crust and filling.
