Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 package chocolate cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

For the Filling:

  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/16 cup butter (1 tablespoon), melted
  • 1 pound powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, 1 egg, and 1/2 cup melted butter. Stir until the mixture is well blended and smooth. Set aside.
  2. Make the Filling: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until creamy. Add the 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon melted butter, and 1 pound powdered sugar. Mix until the filling is smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Assemble the Cake: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan. Spread the chocolate cake batter evenly into the prepared pan. Then, carefully spoon the cream cheese filling evenly over the cake batter.
  4. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs, but not wet batter.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, cut into squares and serve. Enjoy your ooey gooey chocolate cake!

Notes

  • For best results, make sure the cream cheese is softened before mixing to avoid lumps.
  • You can dust the top with extra powdered sugar or cocoa powder for presentation.
  • This cake keeps well refrigerated for up to 4 days; reheat slightly before serving for gooeyness.
  • If you prefer a less sweet filling, reduce the powdered sugar to 3/4 pound.
  • Use high-quality cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor.
