Ingredients

Scale

Sliders

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 sweet rolls
  • 10 slices provolone cheese
  • 14 ounces sliced deli roast beef

Butter Sauce

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 & 1/2 tablespoons dried onion soup mix

Au Jus

  • 1 packet au jus gravy mix
  • 3 cups water

Garnish (optional)

  • Fresh chopped parsley

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add the thinly sliced onion and coat it in the melted butter. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 12-15 minutes until the onions are soft and browned but not burnt. Add minced thyme, kosher salt, and black pepper, stir well, then remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Rolls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the sweet rolls from the package while keeping them intact. Using a large knife, slice them horizontally so you separate the tops from the bottoms. Place the bottom halves cut side up into an 11×7-inch baking dish.
  3. Assemble Sliders: Layer half of the provolone cheese slices over the bottom halves of the rolls. Top with all the sliced roast beef, then evenly spread the caramelized onions over the meat. Add the remaining cheese slices on top of the onions, then place the roll tops over everything to form the sliders.
  4. Prepare Butter Sauce: In a small bowl, stir together the melted 1/2 cup unsalted butter and 1.5 tablespoons dried onion soup mix until well combined. Brush or pour this mixture evenly over the tops of the rolls to coat them thoroughly.
  5. Bake Sliders: Loosely cover the baking dish with foil, ensuring foil does not touch the rolls. Bake for 25 minutes at 350°F. Then remove the foil and bake an additional 5 minutes to brown the tops of the rolls.
  6. Make Au Jus: While the sliders bake, prepare the au jus gravy according to the package instructions using 3 cups water to make a flavorful dipping sauce.
  7. Serve: Garnish the sliders with fresh chopped parsley if desired. Serve hot with the au jus on the side for dipping. Enjoy your delicious French Dip Sliders!

Notes

  • You can substitute sweet rolls with small hoagie rolls or slider buns if unavailable.
  • Cooking the onions low and slow is key to develop sweetness without burning.
  • Use freshly grated or good quality sliced provolone cheese for best melting results.
  • Make sure the foil doesn’t touch the rolls when baking to avoid sogginess.
  • Au jus can be enhanced with a splash of Worcestershire sauce or beef broth for richer flavor.
  • These sliders can be assembled a few hours ahead and refrigerated until ready to bake.
  • Leftovers can be reheated in the oven wrapped in foil to preserve moisture.
