Ingredients

Scale

Rainbow Spaghetti

  • 200g spaghetti
  • A mix of food colourings (red, yellow, green, blue)
  • Salad dressing or melted butter (to taste)
  • 50g cheddar, grated
  • Mixed salad leaves and vegetables (to serve)

Optional for Rainbow Spaghetti Omelette

  • Beaten eggs (quantity as per leftovers)
  • Grated parmesan (to taste)
  • Oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Spaghetti: Boil the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain well.
  2. Divide and Color: Separate the cooked spaghetti into bowls based on how many colors you want to create (the recipe suggests five). Add a drop or a mix of food colourings to each bowl and mix well. Add a splash of water if needed to spread the color evenly.
  3. Set the Colors: Let the colored spaghetti sit for 5 minutes to absorb the colors, then rinse each batch under cold running water to set the color.
  4. Serve for Play or Eating: For sensory play, place the colored spaghetti in a large tray or bowl with optional ice cubes. Older toddlers (2-4 years) can practice cutting skills with safety scissors. For eating, toss the spaghetti with salad dressing or melted butter.
  5. Finish the Dish: Sprinkle grated cheddar over the tossed spaghetti and serve with a fresh salad of mixed leaves and vegetables to complete the meal.
  6. Optional Omelette: Mix any leftover rainbow spaghetti with beaten eggs and grated parmesan. Heat a drop of oil in a small non-stick pan and cook the mixture until set on the bottom. Finish by grilling under high heat until golden and cooked through. Serve in wedges.

Notes

  • Food colouring used should be safe and preferably natural or edible gel dyes.
  • Use cold water rinsing to help set the colors better and prevent bleeding.
  • The dish can serve as both a meal and a playful sensory activity for young children.
  • Leftover rainbow spaghetti can be creatively reused in an omelette for a tasty snack or meal addition.
  • Adjust salad ingredients and dressing based on personal preference or dietary needs.
